Spinelessness Galore: Change You Can Believe In

How do you denounce shooting up a flotilla in international waters one minute, only to turn around the declare it the "right" of a country to enforce a military blockade (an undeclared act of war) in those waters with bullets over fists. This is what Sean Hannity considers being "critical of Israel."

Biden Says Israel Has ‘Absolute Right’ to Deal With Security

By Nicholas Johnston

June 2 (Bloomberg) -- Vice President Joe Biden said Israel has an “absolute right” to act in its security interests as he discussed a raid by Israeli commandos on a flotilla of ships sailing toward the Gaza Strip that left nine dead.

“Israel has an absolute right to deal with its security interest,” Biden said in an interview on PBS television’s “Charlie Rose Show.”

“You can argue whether Israel should have dropped people onto that ship or not, but the truth of the matter is, Israel has a right to know” what was being transported to Gaza, Biden said.

Israel has faced international criticism over the May 31 raid as well as calls for it to lift restrictions on the flow of goods into Gaza, which has been blockaded by Israel since Hamas took control of the territory in 2007.

Biden said Israel does have to be more “generous” to Palestinians living in Gaza, who he said are in “bad shape” because of Israeli restrictions on travel and trade.

The United Nations has called for an investigation into the commando raid. Biden said he supports a “transparent and open” investigation that is led by the Israelis and has “international participation.”

And how do the frothing types repay your slavish loyalty to an ally that slaps you across the face? I think we all know how this is going to turn out.

On the heels of this fiasco, what better way to show how strong and tough you are than meeting with the contemporary incarnation of Bull Connor, to express your slight displeasure with signing a law that collectively punishes and racially profiles all Latinos in the state of Arizona? Yes, Obama, that is really showing them.

Anger over Obama's meeting with Ariz. governor

WASHINGTON – President Barack Obama's planned meeting Thursday with Arizona Gov. Jan Brewer faces a protest from opponents of Arizona's new immigration law.

Opponents say the law, which Brewer signed, is discriminatory and say Obama isn't doing enough on immigration reform.

Brewer is to meet Obama at the White House, and opponents said they will hold a demonstration there to denounce the Republican governor, "the discriminatory Arizona law she signed" and "President Obama's halfhearted leadership on immigration reform."

Supporters of an overhaul of U.S. immigration law have accused Obama of not pushing Congress hard enough to pass immigration legislation. Some have said Arizona's law and tough immigration laws in other states are symptoms of a broken immigration system.

Arizona's new law, scheduled to take effect July 29, will require police enforcing any other law to examine immigration status if there is reasonable suspicion a person is in the country illegally. It also makes being in the country illegally a state crime.

Obama says the law is the wrong approach to illegal immigration and his administration is combing through it and preparing for a possible legal challenge. Brewer has been soliciting donations from the law's supporters to defend it.

In an interview Wednesday, Brewer said she hoped she and Obama could agree on solutions to improve border security.

Brewer said she wants to know how Obama's plan to deploy up to 1,200 National Guard troops to the border with Mexico will affect Arizona and what else he has in mind to tighten border security.

She said she'll make a pitch for her own proposal calling for more troops on the border, deployment of helicopters and surveillance drones and completion of a border fence.

The White House said it would lay out for Brewer the "unprecedented resources" dedicated over the past 16 months to secure the border.

Do any of you remember what Jimmy Carter's response to the Soviet Union was when it invaded Afghanistan? He told the Russians that if they invaded Iran next (who they shared a border with) he would consider it an attack on the US (even though Iran was under control of the mullahs at that point), and would respond with a nuclear strike. That is what we considered a weak president over three decades ago. By comparison, Jimmy Carter is Lincoln compared to what passes for leadership under this administration.

What do you plan to accomplish by meeting with a woman who thinks you, as a black man, Mr. President, is intrinsically racist against whites? Sound far fetched? She signed a law banning ethnic studies (not Europe, of course, just the non-white ones) because she considered them an expression of racial discrimination against whites. This is a Governor whose Republican-dominated legislature is trying to pass a bill to force the president to fork over his birth certificate to "prove" his citizenship. That is the kind of person you are going to be holding a discourse with, who you know will not take you seriously, who will denounce you after your meeting, and tear into you once she is back in Arizona and telling everyone how you caved into her on border patrols and how she won the debate. And you know what, she has won. You caved, just like you caved to Lieberman, Nelson, and the insurance lobby, like you caved to Israel, like you caved to Tom Coburn, like you have caved to every reactionary force in the country.

But there is one group you have shown your resolve to, Mr. President. The people who elected you. Yes, for us, we get nothing but discipline, threatened firings and school closings in a phony "race to the top" campaign on education, being told to accept a non-universal health care bill without the one thing (the public option) that made it worthwhile. For us, we get nothing, but if we were white Republican, right-wing racists, naturally, we would get meetings, listened to, even "compromise" on some of our views, all the while denouncing you as a Maoist-Communist-Islamic terrorist.

And I think we all know what the probability is of President Obama meeting with some of those Latinos in Arizona who will be the targets of Governor Brewer. About the same chance as me being on the remake of Footloose.* But enjoy your meeting with Jan, Obama. Here, let us show the proper relationship between Republicans and Democrats these days, so those of us who elected you and are prohibited from gaining any concessions from you will understand what we have been reduced to.

*=why are they remaking Footloose? Please, Hollywood, if you have no new ideas, just stop making movies. 80% of them are garbage anyway. What's next, Justin Bieber and Aaron Carter in a remake of The Breakfast Club? I was just kidding!
